Free, Local, and Powerful — Your Library Is a STEM Resource

Not every STEM opportunity costs money. Not every learning experience requires an application, a waitlist, or a commute across town.

Some of the best ones are already in your neighborhood.

National Library Week — celebrated April 19–25 this year under the theme “Find Your Joy” — is a perfect moment to spotlight something Harlem STEM Up! has always believed: libraries are one of the most accessible and underutilized STEM resources available to our community.

Here’s what many families may not realize their local branch already offers:

  • Coding and computer access — free internet, digital literacy programs, and introductory coding workshops
  • STEM programming — science demonstrations, robotics kits, and maker activities, especially for young people
  • Career and college resources — research tools, test prep materials, and information on scholarships and educational pathways
  • Books and media — including titles that introduce children and teens to STEM careers through stories they can connect with

Libraries meet young people where they are. They are open to everyone. And they are staffed by professionals whose entire purpose is to help people find what they need.

This week, we encourage everyone in our community to stop by their local branch, explore what’s available, and spread the word to families who may not know what’s waiting for them there.

STEM futures are built on access and exposure. Libraries provide both — for free, every day.

Find your joy at the library this week. And while you’re there, look for a book that sparks something new.
